Sail On was Dick Gaughan’s tenth solo CD but was his first for Appleseed – and was Appleseed’s first release as well! As with all Gaughan’s albums, this one mixes politically biting but soul-freeing Gaughan originals (“Son of Man,” “No Cause for Alarm,” “Sail On”) and a fascinating cross-section of covers, including a definitive version of Pete Seeger’s “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” The Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday,” Richard Thompson’s modern classic “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” and Michael Martin Murphy’s “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” all bearing an undercurrent of social commentary.
