This live acoustic CD, recorded in 1985, marked Dick Gaughan’s first live performance after an illness that robbed him of his powerful voice for many months with no guarantee of its return. As this concert proves, Gaughan’s voice was fully recovered – he calls the evening “one of the most emotional and inspiring experiences my life” – and rings out loud and clear on a repertoire of songs of social and political comment with a sprinkling of traditional ballads. There are songs by Ewan MacColl (“Jamie Foyers,” “Ballad of Accounting,” “Compañeros”), Tommy Makem (“Four Green Fields”), Tommy Sands (“Your Daughters and Your Sons”), Gaughan’s adaptations of others’ lyrics and poetry (“Which Side Are You On?” “Now Westlin Winds,” “Glenlogie”), anarchist songwriter Leon Rosselson’s “World Turned Upside Down,” and a song of deep inspiration to Gaughan, “Victor Jara of Chile.” Gaughan was delighted to be back on stage, and you can tell!
