Originally released on a small German label, this CD is a most coveted title among Gaughan fans. With a full band of supporting musicians, including bassist Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull) and harmony vocalist Judy Sweeney, A Different Kind of Love Song (referring to a love of freedom, rather than romantic love) features outspoken songs of purpose and defiance. Gaughan again draws material from some of his favorite songwriters, including Ewan MacColl (“The Father’s Song”), and Leon Rosselson (“Stand Up for Judas” and “The World Turned Upside Down,” one of the two bonus tracks on the Appleseed reissue). There are also five Gaughan originals and adaptations, a song by fellow Appleseed artist Peggy Seeger (“Song of Choice”), and a surprising cover of Joe South’s country-soul hit, “Games People Play.”
