From DARWIN'S ARMY here’s a great compilation  of songs legendarily old, hiply new, and first-time original. They meet the stated standards: Folk chords. Political. Can be played by one person or  in a group. Singable choruses. Harmonies. Guitars. Banjo. Soaring vocals. By any definition, a collection – and a group – to savor.  A link to yesterday, the immediacy of today, in a sweet presentation of songs that will be sung forever.
                              – Tom De Lisle

Legendary singer and songwriter John Stewart has assembled Darwin’s Army, his first band since leaving the Kingston Trio

Darwin’s Army consists of John Stewart,  his wife Buffy Ford Stewart, and new talents John Hoke and Dave Crossland. Buffy, once asked to front Jefferson Airplane, is a wonderful singer who has recorded with John since their still in-demand duo album from 1968, Signals Through the Glass. John Hoke is a rising West Coast singer-songwriter, and Dave Crossland is a talented songwriter with a tremendous voice and a solo career of his own, including a CD EP on Appleseed, Fields of Promise (2000).

Spanning generations and crossing musical boundaries, Darwin’s Army leads the listener on a musical evolution, presenting fantastic reinterpretations of classic traditional folk songs, daring takes on contemporary classics, and stunning new originals. Here’s one of the first great releases of 1999.
